8,000 students familiarise themselves with World Wide Web

Over 8,000 students from various government high schools in rural areas across the district familiarised themselves with the World Wide Web on Friday.

In order to create awareness on information and communication technologies among high school students in rural areas, the Department of Information Technology, in association with the Department of Public Instruction and the Mandya district administration, had organised the ‘Student Internet World’ at Mandya and other taluks in the district.

Nearly 1,500 students attended the programme at PES College of Engineering in Mandya, while over 6,500 attended the programme held at Malavalli, Maddur, K.R. Pet, Nagamangala and Pandavapura.

Basics of computers

Students of class IX and X, with almost 50 per cent of them being girls, learnt the various facets of the internet world. They were taught the basics of computers and computer accessories, Block Education Officer Mahadev told The Hindu . The students, especially girls, enjoyed operating computers. They visited several websites, gathered information on various issues and learnt how to make use of social media, including Facebook, he said.

Mandya Deputy Commissioner M.N. Ajay Nagabhushan inaugurated the mass Internet training programme at the PES College of Engineering. “The students should learn how to make use of the Internet facility,” he said.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction M. Shivamadappa, principal of the District Institute for Education and Training (DIET) S. Bharthi and Subject Inspector (Education Department) Chikkaswamy were present.
