744 lakes encroached in Bengaluru

As many as 744 out of total 837 lakes in Bengaluru have been encroached. Disclosing this to the Legislative Assembly in his written reply to Bharatiya Janata Party Y. A. Narayanaswamy, Revenue Minister Kagodu Thimmappa said a total of 2,340 acres of lake/lakebed areas had been encroached by 4,247 persons in Bengaluru urban district.

To another query, he said the district administration had not filed any suo motu cases against such land sharks.

The Minister said the rules concerned provided for filing criminal cases against encroachers of lakes. There was also a provision for the special court to imprison such persons.
