A six-year-old boy fell into an open borewell at Sulikeri village of Badami taluk on Sunday.

Timmanna Hatti reportedly fell in the open borewell in his father Hanumantappa Hatti’s farm around 2.30 p.m. while he was playing with him.

According to sources, Mr. Hatti had got the borewell drilled about a fortnight ago and it had not yielded water, and the borewell was left open.

It may be noted that a similar incident had occurred in Nagathan village of Bijapur taluk on June 18 when a four-year-old Akshata Malipatil had fallen in the open borewell. Despite a three-day operation, the girl could not be rescued.

The boy is reportedly stuck at a depth of around 150 feet; however there was no official confirmation about it. The borewell is believed to be nearly 300-ft deep.

The district administration has begun a rescue operation, and Fire and Emergency Services personnel had been pressed into service.

Deputy Commissioner, P.A. Meghannavar who went to the spot, told presspersons that doctors had been sent along with the medical kit and oxygen cylinder to rescue the boy.

He said that the district administration had contacted the staff of the National Disaster Response Force, Pune, and experts at the Hutti Gold Mines, Raichur, to join in the rescue operation.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has directed Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee to send a State disaster management team to the spot to help in the rescue operations.
