527 members elected unopposed to GPs in Vijayapura

In the gram panchayat (GP) elections to be held in the district on May 29, some 527 members have already been elected unopposed in the total 3,378 wards of 206 GPs which are going for polls.

Three GPs where all members of the villages who have got elected unopposed are — Salotagi (34 members), Padanur (12 members) and Umarani (23 members).

While elections would not be held in these GPs as the members have been elected unopposed, the polling will also not be held in 53 village for various reasons including boycotting of polls, stay by the courts or continuing term.

“Though the villages that have boycotted the elections will not have any representation after the polls, the State Election Commission may order for need-based elections. We have submitted the details to the SEC,” said Deputy Commissioner D. Randeep.

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, he said that, if required, an administrator would also be appointed in some GPs, if the elections are not held.

Meanwhile, he said that a total of 9,969 candidates are in fray for the 206 GPs which are going to polls.

The district has some 11, 05,740 voters, of them 5,79,309 male and 5,26,352 female voters.

Deputy Commissioner, Excise Department, Basavaraj said that the officials have conducted 93 raids till date after the announcement of the elections, while cases have been booked against 47 persons, 48 persons have been arrested and 21 vehicles have been seized that were carrying liquor. The total cost of the seized material is about Rs. 8.59 lakh, he said.
