Minister for Primary and Secondary Education N. Mahesh has said that ₹5,000 crore was needed for repair works and infrastructure development in schools across the State.

He told reporters after the Independence Day parade here that his department was contemplating getting assistance from NGOs, philanthropists and elected representatives for these works instead of waiting for government grants. He said he would soon write to legislators requesting them to take up the responsibility of developing a school in their respective constituencies.

To a query, he said he partly welcomed the Mahadayi verdict. The Chief Minister has decided to consult experts on the issue and would take the next step based on their suggestion, he said.

The Minister said the government had come up with the ‘Hasiru Karnataka’ scheme keeping in mind the future of humanity. “Gadag district has just 6% forest cover and there is need for everyone to join hands with the Forest Department to increase it to 10%,” he said.
