4,759 candidates in the fray for GP polls in Udupi

272 candidates have been elected unopposed in the district

As many as 4,759 candidates are in the fray after the last date for withdrawal of nominations for Gram Panchayat elections in Udupi district.

An official press release issued here on Friday said that after the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers on Thursday, as many as 4,759 candidates were in the fray in Udupi district including 2,082 candidates in Udupi taluk, 1,712 candidates in Kundapur taluk and 965 candidates in Karkala taluk.

There are a total of 2,398 seats in 155 Gram Panchayats in the district including 62 Gram Panchayats in Kundapur taluk, 59 Gram Panchayats in Udupi taluk and 34 Gram Panchayats in Karkala taluk.

However, as many as 272 candidates have been elected unopposed for Gram Panchayats in the district. This includes 142 candidates in Kundapur taluk, 90 candidates in Udupi taluk and 40 candidates in Karkala taluk.

Hence, elections would be held for a total of 2,226 seats (minus 272 seats which have elected candidates unopposed) in the district including 733 seats in Kundapur taluk, 941 seats in Udupi taluk and 452 seats in Karkala taluk.

The polling for the Gram Panchayat elections would be held on May 29 and the counting of votes would take place on June 5.
