21 students hospitalised with signs of diphtheria in Kalaburagi

As many as 21 girls studying at GIMS Medical College were admitted to GIMS hospital on Saturday with symptoms of diphtheria.

GIMS Medical Superintendent R. Shivakumar said that 110 students of the girls’ hostel were screened by the ENT department after they complained of fever, sore throat and a patch over the tonsils. Of them, 21 are under observation.

Dr. Shivakumar said the remaining students are being treated with oral antibiotics. He said a quick response team, including the District Health Officer and GIMS and authorities of different wards at the hospital, held a meeting.

Dr. Shivakumar also confirmed that all 21 students were stable.
