20 per cent teacher aspirants clear Karnataka TET

more-in

About 20.8 per cent of the total 3.26 lakh candidates have cleared the Karnataka Teacher’s Eligibility Test (KarTET), the test to teach in primary schools.

The results of the KarTET conducted in September 2015 were announced on Tuesday.

Improvement

This is a 14.14 per cent improvement compared to the previous KarTET where 6.66 per cent of the 3.86 lakh candidates had cleared the test. Many school managements, particularly from private institutes, had raised a concern that there would be a shortage of eligible teachers to teach in primary classes.

Lack of monitoring system

A department official conceded that most schools are recruiting teachers who have not cleared the KarTET and there was a lack of monitoring mechanism within the department.

While acknowledging that there was a marked improvement in the results in this examination, H.S. Ganesha Bhatta, principal, MES Teachers College, Bengaluru, said there is a need to improve teacher training institutes as they are outdated in their curriculum.

“Majority of the lecturers in teachers training institute do not have content knowledge and need to upgrade their knowledge,” he said.
