13,933 people missing since 2015 in State: Police

As many as 13,933 people, of the total 51,429 who went missing in the State between January 1, 2015 and June 30, 2018, are still missing. This includes men, women, boys and girls.

While a total of 26,713 women, the highest among the missing people, went missing in this period, 6,280 of them remained untraced.

According to the data of missing men, women, boys and girls submitted to the High Court of Karnataka by the State police on Monday, 15,006 people went missing in 2015 and of them 13,142 were traced.

The statistics submitted to the Court are based on the number of complaints lodged with the police about missing persons.

Similarly, 14,359 went missing in 2016, and 11,656 of them were traced during. As many as 14,522 people went missing in 2017 and 8,997 were traced. As many as 7,542 people went missing till June 30 in 2018 of them 3,701 have been traced.

An analysis of statistics submitted to the Court shows that 6,089 men are still missing of the total 17,696 who went missing between 2015 and 2018.

Similarly, 824 boys and 740 girls are still untraceable of the total 3,845 boys and 3,175 girls who went missing since 2015.

As many as 7,542 people (2,493 men, 4,271 women, 340 boys and 438 girls) went missing in 2018 and of them only 3,701 people (993 men, 2338 women, 152 boys and 213 girls) have been traced as on June 30, 2018.

As many as 3,841 people, who went missing this year, are yet to be traced.

A Division Bench, comprising Justice Raghvendra S. Chauhan and Justice H.T. Narendra Prasad, pointed out that the three problems — the plight of the migrant population, of human trafficking, and the problem of girls being sold into the flesh market — are large-scale problems facing the society and on July 17 directed the police to submit the particulars of missing boys and girls during the hearing of a habeas corpus petition related to a missing son of a migrant labourer from Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, the Bench on Monday expressed its dissatisfaction over the details provided in the affidavit submitted by an in-charge deputy superintendent of police (crime) working in the office of the State Police Chief, and directed the State Police Chief to submit an affidavit while adjourning further hearing till September 3.
