Minister for Higher Education R.V. Deshpande said the centres will help provide quality education to poor students.

Minister for Tourism and Higher Education R.V. Deshpande said on Friday that the Ministry has set up 122 centres to admit students to government polytechnics across the State.

He was speaking after inaugurating the new building of the government polytechnic here, constructed at a cost of Rs. 8 crore.

Mr. Deshpande said so far there were only 45 such centres across the State. The intention behind adding more centres was so that students coming from rural areas did not have to travel much to get admission for polytechnics.

There were 81 government polytechnics in the State. Of these, 22 did not have their own buildings. Hence, the Siddaramaiah government had allocated Rs. 26 crore to construct buildings and provide basic facilities such as labs and instruments in 10 government engineering colleges. “The aim is to provide quality education so that students can succeed in the competitive global market,” the Minister said.

Usually, students from poor and middle class backgrounds joined the government polytechnics. It was essential that they too had education on par with the best.

An additional Rs. 55 lakh would be provided for the new building of the government polytechnic in Manipal for installing interlock tiles, constructing a stormwater drain, a compound wall and for providing drinking water facility,” Mr. Deshpande said.
