In an initiative to bridge the digital divide and complement Railways’ mobile applications, 115 railway stations in Karnataka are now equipped with Wi-Fi facilities.
According to a release by South Western Railway, railway commuters will now be able to make use of various railway services using these applications.
Out of the 115 stations, 32 are under the Mysuru Division. The Bengaluru and Hubballi divisions have 27 stations each.
The project is part of the ‘Digital India’ initiative of the Union government and was announced in the 2016 Railway Budget.
The Railway Board had entrusted the work to Rail-Tel for provision of wi-fi at stations across India in collaboration with Google.
While Rail-Tel is providing high-speed end-to-end network connectivity on optical fibre cables (OFC), Google is providing radio access network equipment along with technology support.
Work in SWR has been completed within 18 months. The free Wi-Fi facility has been made available not only in bigger railway stations but also at halt stations, according to the release.
