A day after the incident in which 50 children and four teachers had a miraculous escape after their school bus caught fire near Vasanthnagar here, the Mysuru City Police have taken a serious note of it and are contemplating to issue instructions to private school managements on safety measures.
“There are certain guidelines which the schools are supposed to follow. We will reorient them on these aspects so that safety gets top priority in buses used for picking up and dropping children,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) H.T. Shekar. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Shekar said he would first discuss the issue with Police Commissioner B. Dayananda and then issue directions to all the school managements on the maintenance of buses and safety steps.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services may perhaps have to impart training to school personnel on the steps to be taken in case of accidental fires in their buses, Mr. Shekar said.
The DCP said the office of the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) is supposed to undertake fitness checks of the buses carrying school children. “Focus should be on all these issues,” he added.
