‘Replace fizzy drinks with coconut water in multiplexes’

Would you rather sip on tender coconut water than fizzy drinks in a multiplex?

Demanding a ban on sale of aerated beverages and other cool drinks in multiplexes and malls, M.K. Pranesh, BJP MLC, on Tuesday said permission should instead be given to farmers to sell tender coconut water here. Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Legislative Council, he said this would help not only farmers facing crisis owing to drought, but also be in the interest of the health of people. Mr. Pranesh said the Tamil Nadu government had recently banned sale of aerated beverages in multiplexes and replaced it with tender coconut water. “A similar decision should be taken in Karnataka,” he said.

Pointing out that the State has over 1,500 multiplexes, he said: “Allowing sale of tender coconut water in multiplexes would not affect the business of cool drinks manufacturers, as they had several sale points through retailers on every street and in eateries and hotels.”

However, consumers should not be forced to pay more as the price of cool drinks and tender coconuts is the same (around ₹30), he pointed out. Leader G. Parameshwara said the Chief Minister would take a call.
