Interim Chairperson of Karnataka State Human Rights Commission, Meera Saxena, expressed grave concern over the increase in the atrocities on women and children and underlined the need to include human rights in school syllabus.
Speaking after inaugurating the “World Human Rights Day”, organised jointly by the district administration and Human Rights Awareness Committee here on Wednesday, Ms. Saxena said that if human rights was made part of the syllabus, it would help the children to know about its importance and help in prevention of violation to a great extent.
She also exhorted people to join hands with the government to eradicate atrocities on women and children and also to fight against violation of human rights.
“Society should not tolerate atrocities on women and children. There are laws enacted on several issues. But enacting the laws alone will not serve the purpose until and unless people, in general and non-government organisations (NGOs) take up the issue and fight against all kinds of atrocities and violation of human rights making use of the law”, she said.
Referring to menstruating women and breast-feeding mothers kept out of the house due to superstition or blind belief, Ms. Saxsena said that it was a violation of human rights. She underlined the need to put an end to this kind of traditional social practice in a delicate manner making use of the law and also by creating awareness among the people of the particular community.
M.H. Shanta, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary District Legal Service Authority, while explaining about the legal services being provided to the needy, said that education was a must for understanding the law and also to assert their rights guaranteed under the constitution.
