July 26, 2012 11:48 pm | Updated 11:48 pm IST - GUWAHATI:

The key accused in the July 9 Guwahati molestation case, Amarjyoti Kalita, was remanded in five days’ police custody by the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate here on Thursday. The police sought a seven-day remand.

Kalita, arrested in Varanasi on July 23 and brought to the city on Wednesday evening, was produced in the court amid tight security. The police erected a bamboo barricade around the court apprehending public outrage against Kalita, as a huge crowd gathered on the premises. However, lawyers raised objection, saying the barricade obstructed their movement. It was later removed from the main entrance to the court.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested one more accused from Baihata Chariali in Kamrup district, taking the total to 14 including a television journalist.
