Journalists not safe in the Valley, says NHRC

Journalists, including those with police protection, are not safe in the Valley, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has observed while sending notices to the J&K government and police over the murder of editor Shujaat Bukahri.

The NHRC on Monday said that it has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report about a group of scribes under the banner South Asia Media Defenders Network urging it to push for a speedy probe into the killing of Mr. Bukhari. Citing reports, it said Mr. Bukhari, who was the editor of Rising Kashmir , had been under police protection since 2000.
