The Delhi police have said that the masked miscreants used “code words” during the violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday to avoid beating up their own people.
A senior police officer said that after violence broke out in the Periyar hostel late in the afternoon, the hostellers circulated messages on WhatsApp asking for help from other residents and friends outside.
The police said they had got the screen shots of the messages posted by the goons inciting the mob. The police are going through the details of the suspect mobile phone numbers and trying to match their location with the time of the violence.
Police spokesperson Mandeep Singh Randhawa said they had come across several screen shots of chats during the violence and mobile videos. “The Crime Branch has seized many of these screen shots and mobile videos to reconstruct the sequence of events,” Mr. Randhawa said.
JNUSU complaint
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union alleged on Sunday that WhatsApp groups had been created to help the attackers single out union representatives.
Asked about these WhatsApp groups, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad said they had been created by leftist students trying to “malign our organisation.”
