JNU students ate beef, worshipped Mahishasur: police report

February 18, 2016 02:48 am | Updated December 04, 2021 10:56 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) ate beef on the campus and >worshipped Mahishasur instead of goddess Durga and hence they are “anti-nationals,” said a Delhi Police report on the Afzal Guru event held on the campus on February 9.

The report reveals how the police had been snooping in the campus for the last two years and wanted the authorities to install CCTV cameras on the campus to monitor activities.

“The Special Branch of the Delhi Police has always kept an eye on the activities of students, students’ organisations and people who have a stake at >JNU . In this regard, we have sent reports earlier also,” the police report on the incident read. It shows that the former Vice-Chancellor, S.K. Sopory, was aware of the police snooping.

“On October 16, 2015, the ACP, Special Branch, met Vice-Chancellor S.K. Sopory. During the meeting, various issues were discussed, including installing CCTV cameras to avoid any untoward incident. It was also discussed that often students were involved in slogan-shouting on the campus,” the report said.

It said two hidden groups — Democratic Students’ Union and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) — were found involved in “anti-national” and “anti-social” activities. “Two hidden groups have been found indulging in anti-national activities. Sometimes, they have prepared nude and objectionable pictures of deities and affix them on the wall to hurt sentiments. They have mourned the death of >Afzal Guru , they have celebrated the killing of CRPF jawans in Dantewada, they have worshipped Mahishasur in place of Goddess Durga, demanded beef, invited S.A.R. Geelani for a lecture at the university,” the report said. It named 19 students, and most of them passed out a year back or more.

The DSF members have reacted strongly to the report. “All the activities attributed to the DSF by the Special Branch are false and mischievous, aimed at tarnishing our image and making us targets of repression. We challenge the Delhi Police to provide even a shred of evidence.”

BJP MLA joins probe

BJP MLA O. P. Sharma who was caught on camera beating a CPI activist at Patiala House court on Monday, joined the probe into the assault case on Thursday, a day after he was served summons by Delhi Police. Sharma, a first-time MLA, presented himself before the Tilak Marg police station. The police had yesterday issued summons to him as well as three lawyers in connection with assault on journalists and JNU students and teachers at the court complex on Monday.
