JNU faculty members have come out in support of students named in the February 9 Afzal Guru event on the campus, and have requested the Vice-Chancellor “to restore normalcy on the campus and ensure that those students can return to academic activity.” The teachers were also of the view that “whatever transpired does not constitute a major act of indiscipline.”
A meeting of chairpersons of all centres of the School of Social Sciences noted that a significant number of students named in the February 9 incident are from the School of Social Sciences.
According to sources in the university, the teachers who have known these students for long and have interacted with them in classrooms and as supervisors were of the view that “their conduct and performance hitherto have been exemplary.”
“The teachers were also of the view that despite the procedural lapses in the enquiry process, it appears from the available sections of the enquiry report that whatever transpired does not constitute a major act of indiscipline,” a source in the university said.
Members present at the meeting also brought this to the notice of Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar, with the request to restore normalcy on the campus and ensure that the named students returned to academic activity.
