The BJP’s ally, the Janata Dal (United), on Thursday said it would vote against the Centre if a Bill on triple talaq comes up in the Rajya Sabha for passage.
Slamming the BJP, the JD(U) said the Bill was unnecessarily “hurried and rushed up.”
“The way the Bill was taken up in a hurried manner should have been avoided and more consultation should have taken place on the issue…if it comes up in the Rajya Sabha for passage we will oppose and vote against the government,” JD(U) State president Vasistha Narayan Singh said here.
The JD(U)’s stand has embarrassed its ruling alliance partner in Bihar as no State BJP leader was willing to react on Mr. Singh’s comment. Political observers say the JD(U) cannot afford to support the triple talaq Bill and antagonise 17% of Muslim population in Bihar.
Earlier, the JD(U) had made it clear that it would not support the BJP’s Ram mandir agenda.
