"It’s a happy occasion and an occasion of great honour, says BJP leader

National Democratic Alliance candidate and senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh filed his papers on Friday, last day for nominations for the August 7 vice-presidential election.

Three sets of nominations were given to Returning Officer and Lok Sabha Secretary-General T.K. Viswanathan here.

Mr. Singh was accompanied by senior BJP leaders L.K. Advani, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Yashwant Sinha; Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav, Shiv Sena leader Anant Gete and Shiromani Akali Dal leaders Surjit Singh Ajnala and Harsimrat Kaur.

Describing his filing papers as a “happy occasion and an occasion of great honour,” Mr. Singh said he was hopeful of romping home, adding the vice-presidential election was beyond numbers. Elections to the high offices of President and Vice-President were ‘historic moments.’

Mr. Singh denied that he was contesting to keep the NDA flock together.
