Congress, PDP welcome polls

The Congress and the People's Democratic Party have welcomed the Elections Commission’s decision to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The Election Commission has announced five phase elections in Jammu and Kashmir beginning on November 25. Results will be declared on December 23.

“We welcome the EC decision to hold the election on time. It is a wise decision and we had asked for it,” G.N. Monga, senior Congress leader and legislator, told The Hindu. He said that while the Congress had not performed well in other places, the party was hopeful that it would do better in the State.

The PDP said the EC had taken the right decision. “There should have been undivided attention towards the flood victims because the situation is truly grim on the ground, but the ruling party was not doing that. They were filling their coffers and we thought it better to let the people choose a lasting and fresh government to deal with the problems,” party chief spokesperson Nayeem Akhter told The Hindu.

Omar unhappy

“While the NC was keen on rehabilitating the flood-affected people before the political rehabilitation of anyone else, the EC felt differently,” Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, reacting to the Election Commission’s decision to hold elections in the State. “Now with election dates announced, there is no question of not contesting the polls. We will put our best foot forward,” he said.
