Only three out of five inland waterways are operational now

June 03, 2015 02:08 am | Updated 02:08 am IST - NEW DELHI:

A Bill to develop an additional 101 inland waterways will be tabled in the winter session of Parliament, Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari, said on Monday.

“We are confident that the Bill will be passed in the winter session and we are open to suggestions,” he said speaking at FICCI’s National Conference on Inland Waterways.

India currently has five inland waterways while only three are operational. Mr. Gadkari said this has been a neglected sector due to lack of focus and policy measures.

“India is in the last position in the world in this sector,” he said.
