Indian-origin doctor groped, secretly filmed women patients

March 17, 2013 01:55 am | Updated 01:55 am IST - LONDON:

An Indian-origin doctor is facing jail after he admitted to groping and secretly filming “intimate” examination of hundreds of women patients using a James Bond-style spywatch — a camera hidden in a wrist-watch.

Dr. Davinderjit Bains (45), who reportedly trained in Mangalore, was arrested after police found 361 video clips filmed on the wristwatch – some as long as 45 minutes — following a complaint from a woman that he assaulted her. The woman, a student lodger in his house, also said that he filmed her while she was taking a shower.

Appearing at Swindon Crown Court, Dr. Bains pleaded guilty to 39 counts of sexual assault and voyeurism. He was remanded in custody, pending sentencing.

Police described him as a “sexual predator’’ who had betrayed the trust of his patients.

“A large number of female patients, including teenage girls, put their trust in this man to treat them with the professionalism, care and discretion that we all expect of our family doctor. But today he stands exposed as someone who has utterly betrayed that trust for his own sexual gratification,’’ said Detective Inspector Mark Garrett.

According to The Daily Mail , Dr. Bains, reported to be separated from his wife, used an analogue watch — “a Tieex 4GB Waterproof HD Spy Watch DVR’’ — to film his victims.

“Hidden in the number six was a tiny high-definition camera, which he used to record examinations between 2010 and 2012 that police said were ‘for his own gratification’ and ‘could not be justified as an examination,’’’ it said.

Dr. Bains, who practised in a National Health Service surgery in Wiltshire, south-west England, has been suspended by the General Medical Council.

The local NHS Trust called his conduct “shocking and distressing.” “We are appalled at the crimes to which Dr. Bains has pleaded guilty. It is clear that he violated the trust and dignity of those who looked to him for professional care and support. Such cynical abuse of his position, and the way he concealed these serious offences, is reprehensible,’’ it said.
