West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday left for a three-day visit to New Delhi. She is likely to hold discussion with the Opposition political parties including the Congress for a consensus on the Opposition candidate for the office of President of India. Ms. Banerjee is likely to meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday.
She is also likely to hold meeting with leaders from other parties like Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal and other parties.
CM’s preferences
Ms. Banerjee, one of the most vocal voices against the Narendra Modi government is likely to join forces with the Opposition parties if they decide on a consensus candidate. Earlier in March, Ms. Banerjee had said that she would be happy to see if BJP leaders like L.K. Advani and Sushma Swaraj, with whom she shares cordial relationship, are elected to the office of President.
Civic poll violence
In another development the Opposition Congress and the Left Front decided to move an adjournment motion in the Assembly against the alleged violence in the municipal poll.
The motion will be brought in the upcoming session of State Assembly, Leader of Opposition Adbul Mannan told journalists.
Large-scale violence was reported in the polls of seven municipalities in the State on Sunday.
