In Assam, Congress to focus on door-to-door campaign

PM, Sonia, Rahul to address election rallies

The ruling Congress in Assam has decided to focus more on door-to-door campaigning and organise campaign meetings at the block level in addition to election rallies for the coming Lok Sabha polls.

The State Election Campaign Committee, which met here on Sunday, also discussed plans for election rallies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice- president Rahul Gandhi for the first phase of polling in five Lok Sabha constituencies — Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Kaliabor and Tezpur.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to address a rally in Jorhat on March 29, Ms Sonia Gandhi in Lakhimpur on March 28 and Mr. Rahul Gandhi in Dibrugarh. “While rallies by star campaigners will be very much there, more emphasis will be given on running door-to-door campaigning and holding campaign meetings at the block level to ensure direct contact with maximum number of voters,” a member of the newly constituted 177-member campaign committee, told The Hindu.

The party won the four constituencies-- Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Kaliabor, while the Asom Gana Parishad won the Tezpur constituency in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.
