Nationalist Congress Party president and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar on Saturday called for implementation of the recommendations of the Sachar Committee Report on the Status of Muslim Community of India and the Ranganath Mishra Commission Report on Religious and Linguistic Minorities.
“If the Constitution needs to be amended for implementation of these reports, it should be,” he said at his party's National Convention on Minorities here.
Pointing out that the two reports had brought out the status of minorities in the country, he said: “If a large chunk of people are ignored from the development process then something is wrong.”
He wanted the Commission for Equal Opportunities to be set up expeditiously and sought review of the Wakf Act to ensure that all encroachments on Wakf land were removed.
He announced that his party, in collaboration with the Maulana Azad Education Foundation (funded by the Ministry of Minority Affairs), would work towards setting up educational institutions through the voluntary sector route in Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
