He is the most senior official among the five secretaries in the Finance Ministry

Rajiv Kumar, Secretary, Financial Services in the Ministry of Finance, was on Tuesday designated as Finance Secretary by virtue of his seniority.

A 1984 batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, Mr. Kumar is the most senior official among the five Secretaries in the Ministry. As per norm, the most senior IAS officer in the Ministry is designated as the Finance Secretary.

Recently, Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg was shunted out of the Ministry and posted as Secretary, Ministry of Power, in a large-scale bureaucratic shake-up effected by the Modi administration.

Mr. Garg, who was the Economic Affairs Secretary, was designated as Finance Secretary owing to his seniority. He was replaced by Gujarat cadre IAS Atanu Chakraborty.

On Tuesday, the Department of Personnal and training (DoPT) issued a notification on Mr. Kumar’s appointment after the approval of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the Prime Minister.
