A Sukhoi fighter plane takes off from the Air Force Station, Thanjavur.

A Su-30MKI fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force on Tuesday went missing while on a routine sortie in Assam.

“A Su-30 aircraft airborne today on a routine training mission lost radar and radio contact approximately 60km North of Tejpur. The aircraft is overdue and actions have been initiated,” sources in the IAF said.

Su-30MKI is the mainstay and the most modern fighter aircraft in the IAF inventory. India has contracted 272 Su-30MKIs from Russia, of which over 240 have been inducted so far.

Seven aircraft had crashed since their induction in 1997, the last one being in March this year.
