Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan for a lunch meeting on Thursday. It is learnt that they discussed several key issues relating to the government, which completed its first month in office on June 26.
The Modi government is facing criticism from political opponents over the removal of UPA-appointed Governors, the rejection of the recommendation to appoint Gopal Subramanium as a Supreme Court judge and rising prices of essential commodities.
Mr. Modi has said he would brief the President on important decisions on a regular basis. Thursday’s meeting comes just four days ahead of Parliament’s Budget session. The Prime Minister was also given a 45-minute tour of the Rashtrapati Bhavan by the Secretary to the President, Omita Paul.
Meanwhile, the President on Thursday accepted the resignation of M.K. Narayanan as the Governor of West Bengal and gave Bihar Governor Dr. D.Y. Patil additional charge of West Bengal. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh told journalists that the government would soon fill the gubernatorial vacancies as four Governors have resigned and two have completed their tenure.
