How many times has President's rule been imposed across States?

Since the late 1990s, instances of President’s rule have been few and far between compared to the past.

On November 12, President’s rule was imposed in Maharashtra, only the third such instance in the State. Uttar Pradesh has seen the highest number of such instances, while undivided J&K held the record for most days under President’s rule.

The graph shows State-wise instances in bold and total days under such rule in italics. Each rectangle corresponds to an instance and its length indicates days.
