Dharam Jagaran Samiti, the Hindutva outfit on Tuesday “temporarily” called off its plan to organise the “biggest ever” conversion of Muslims and Christian in Aligarh on Christmas. According to reliable sources in the DJS the RSS on Tuesday evening asked the outfit to call off the drive.
The development came after the move became an embarrassment for the Narendra Modi government and the Opposition targeted it in Parliament. Last week a Hindu outfit was accused of tricking Muslims into converting to Hinduism in Agra after which several other rightwing groups announced their plans to organise ‘ghar vapsi’ camps across the country.
“The instruction to postpone the ghar vapsi event came from the Sangh,” a senior office-bearer of the DJS told The Hindu.
The DJS office-bearers have claimed that the ‘ghar vapsi’ programme will be organised after convincing the administration.
The Aligarh administration had banned the conversion programme but the Hindutva outfit seemed intent on organising it. The ban was imposed as the State government feared it would lead to communal disturbances and law and order problems.
