High alert in Mumbai, Pune following Gurdaspur attack

Intelligence agencies issued high alert in several parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and Pune, soon after the terror attack in Punjab’s Gurdaspur on Monday.

“Intelligence agencies have sounded a high alert for Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad and Nagpur cities. We have been informed about the need to provide high security for a few days in places like malls, railway stations and cinema halls as there could be a possible terror attack in one of these cities,” Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde said.

Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, too, said that following the incident high alert in the city as well as the other parts of the State. He said there were inputs from the Centre about the likely security situation in event of Yakub Memon’s hanging and added measures have been put in place.

The security in Nagpur has also been stepped up keeping in view Yakub Memon’s likely execution and the added terror threat have led to further steps, said a senior police officer.

In Nashik, where the Kumbh Mela is being held, a suspicious bag triggered speculations, but the police later clarified that it was a lost bag which belonged to a student.
