The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday acquitted former Cabinet Minister and Akali Dal leader Bibi Jagir Kaur, and others from charges of kidnapping and forcible abortion of her daughter Harpreet Kaur.

Ms. Kaur had also served as the only woman president of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee.

The Division Bench of Justice A.B. Chaudhari and Justice Kuldip Singh allowed Ms. Kaur’s appeal and set aside the 2012 order of the Central Bureau of Investigation special court in Patiala.

Acquitted of murder

The CBI special court had awarded Ms. Kaur five years imprisonment for kidnapping and forced abortion of her daughter. She was, however, acquitted of the murder charge by the special court.

Defence counsel Vinod Ghai told reporters that the High Court dismissed the appeal of the CBI and complainant Kamaljit Singh, filed against the special CBI court’s order, acquitting Ms. Kaur of murder charge.

Harpreet Kaur had died under mysterious circumstances in 2000, and was cremated without conducting post-mortem, raising eyebrows.

Talking to journalists, Ms. Kaur said, “I am glad that after 18 long years, I have received justice by being acquitted from this politically-motivated case.”
