Rebel Janata Dal(U) leader Sharad Yadav said here on Saturday that the 2019 Lok Sabha elections would be fought on “economic issues”. Mr Yadav termed the tweaking of the tax slabs by the GST Council on Friday an “eye wash” to appease a critical public.

At a press conference, Mr. Yadav said, “The amendments to the GST announced by the Finance Ministry on Friday are just meant to divert the attention of the people from the real issues.”

“After demonetisation and GST, production of industries, sale and purchase by traders and other businesses have been reduced to the extent from 20% to 80%,” he said. “The most affected sector has been the real estate sector and due to that, a number of labourers have been forced to return to their villages.”

He said a party national council meeting would be held here on Sunday.
