Gas victims feel let down

The price for the 14-year delay on the part of the CBI and the Madhya Pradesh government is eventually being paid by the victims, survivors of the Bhopal gas tragedy have said.

They were reacting to the Supreme Court's decision rejecting the curative petition filed by the CBI in the Bhopal gas tragedy case.

Survivor organisations and activists expressed disappointment at the court's decision. “If delay was the only reason, why did the Supreme Court reject the review petition filed by us immediately after the 1996 judgment,” asked Abdul Jabbar of the Bhopal Gas Peedith Mahila Udyog Sangathan.

He said the original compensation package announced in 1989 itself was a disappointment, and now also the victims were let down.
