The ideals and path shown by Mahatma Gandhi are extremely relevant today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday in a message on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. “Greetings to everyone on the U.N. Day. The U.N. completes 70 years in service of humanity, committed to its goal of making the world a peaceful place,” he said.
“The ideals and path shown by Gandhiji are extremely relevant today and they resonate with the U.N. charter and ideals of the U.N.,” Mr. Modi said.
His reference to Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals and path assumes significance in view of the recent incidents of violence, like lynching of a man in Uttar Pradesh over beef-eating rumours and burning of a Dalit family in Haryana.
The Prime Minister said “India is at the forefront of various initiatives of the U.N. and is committed to doing its best in supporting the U.N. in their endeavours.”
He noted that on the U.N. day, iconic buildings worldwide would be illuminated in blue at night and said, in India, Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad would be illuminated. — PTI
