Lashing out at the Congress for attacking the BJP over its ties to the RSS, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Friday that the RSS was a “band of patriots.”

Congress leader Ashwani Kumar had earlier accused the BJP government of doing divisive politics at the behest of the RSS.

“I am a complete RSS worker. I have joined struggles. I left studies and went to jail for the nation’s cause. The PM has been pracharak of the RSS. We are patriots. Is it a violation of Constitution or criminal procedure code if someone is of the RSS?” Mr. Gadkari said at a programme Agenda Aaj Tak in New Delhi.

“Is the RSS an organisation like IS? We take pride in it. The Congress is behaving like a fish out of water after losing power.” He asked the Congress to do politics within the limits of decency and accused it of portraying PM Narendra Modi as a “villain.”

Mr. Gadkari said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s linking of the judicial process in the National Herald case with the Prime Minister’s pressure was an insult to the judicial system.
