Large parts of Kolkata and adjoining areas received heavy rainfall on Monday that threw normal life out gear.

Five persons were killed in lighting strikes in three districts of south Bengal, while a seven-year old boy drowned in Cooch Behar district.

The services of suburban railway network at Howrah and Sealdah were affected due to the torrential rain. Waterlogging in several parts of the city, like Ultadanga, Tollygunge, Patipukur Central Avenue and Dankuni, added to the ordeal of commuters.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation opened some of the lock gates to drain out excess water from certain areas of the city.

Weathermen have predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in the five districts of north Bengal—Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Malda and Uttar Dinjapur.
