Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, holed up in a building in Srinagar after an abortive attempt to storm the CRPF headquarters on Monday, were killed in a 28-hour operation on Tuesday.
“The operation ended on Tuesday afternoon, with the killing of the two militants. The incriminating material recovered suggested they belonged to the LeT,” said Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir range) S.P. Pani.
He said they were hiding in an under-construction, multi-storied building. “While planning the operation, due care was taken to avoid collateral damage.” Two AK-47 rifles, eight AK-47 magazines and war-like stores were recovered from the encounter site.
A sentry of the CRPF’s 23 Battalion headquarters repulsed the fidayeen attack on Monday morning when he spotted them and opened fire.
The militants later took shelter in the building.
One CRPF jawan, identified as constable Mohammad Mujazhid Khan, was also killed in the firing.
The police said Javid Ahmad, a policeman, suffered bullet injuries “but was stable.”
Meanwhile one more body was recovered from the encounter site in Jammu’s Sunjuwan Army camp, taking the toll in the fidayeen attack to 10: six soldiers, one civilian and three militants.
