ED initiates fresh inquiry into National Herald issue

September 19, 2015 02:40 am | Updated November 16, 2021 04:27 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

The Enforcement Directorate has initiated a fresh inquiry into the money laundering allegations in connection with the acquisition of National Herald by Young Indian. It is learnt that the decision has been taken on the basis of a legal opinion sought on the issue.

In July last year, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had approached the agency seeking registration of a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The Directorate initially expressed its inability stating that no such action could be taken as none of the primary investigating agencies had registered a case on the same set of allegations.

The ED had also written to the Department of Revenue saying that no case was made out due to technical reasons.

Following two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding action, the extended tenure of the then ED Director was curtailed and the new chief appointed on additional charge.

The agency has now revisited Dr. Swamy’s complaint and feels it can be inquired into given that the trial court has taken cognisance of the same.
