EC lets Jaiswal off the hook

March 02, 2012 01:52 am | Updated 01:52 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Election Commission has given a clean chit to Coal Minister and Congress leader Sri Prakash Jaiswal by rejecting the complaints filed by the BJP and the SP against him.

The parries had alleged that he intimidated voters by making a statement on February 23 at Kanpur asking them to either vote for the Congress or face the imposition of President's rule in Uttar Pradesh.

“..The Commission is satisfied that Mr. Jaiswal had no intention of threatening or intimidating the electors by making the impugned statement and has decided not to pursue the matter,” the EC said in an order on Thursday.

The EC issued a notice to the Minister seeking his reply by 2 p.m. on February 27 for allegedly violating the model code of conduct.
