The Delhi Union of Journalists has congratulated the employees’ union and the management of The Hindu and Group publications for the announcement of a goodwill incentive payment in addition to 20 per cent bonus, pre-Deepavali.

While congratulating The Hindu Office & National Press Employees’ Union, DUJ president Sujata Madhok, general secretary S.K. Pande and treasurer Amit Prakash Singh said in a statement issued on Wednesday that the announcement puts paid to the argument that newspapers are low in profitability and that owners cannot afford to pay workers wages as per the Majithia Wage Boards for Newspaper Employees notified by the Government of India in 2011.

“We urge all newspapers to do justice to their employees by immediately implementing the pay scales and providing the facilities recommended,” the DUJ said.

The DUJ called upon [certain] newspaper managements to withdraw their petition in the Supreme Court challenging the award.

It also asked State governments to set up special cells and constitute tripartite monitoring committees “to oversee and ensure implementation of the wage award, as recommended to them by the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment.”
