His remark has drawn sharp reaction from students’ wing, social media users

Speaking at an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), North-West Delhi MP Hans Raj Hans said that the university should be renamed after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Mr. Hans was performing at the musical event ‘Ek Shaam Shaheedon Ke Naam’, when he spoke about the abrogation of Article 370 and said that Kashmir would now become a paradise. The MP said he “prays that there is peace in the Valley”.

The BJP MP said, “We are facing the brunt of mistakes committed by our elders,” clarifying that it was Jawaharlal Nehru who committed “mistakes” in the past and those were now being corrected by Mr. Modi and for his contribution, Jawaharlal Nehru University should be renamed as ‘Modi Nehru University’.

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, speaking at the function, said there was a positive change in JNU. He said, although some people had raised anti-India slogans in the past, the university had grown and changed with time.

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), meanwhile, reacted strongly to Mr. Hans’ suggestion related to the renaming of the university and said that JNU was a place where students and professors question the government on the deterioration of India’s political conditions from time to time and that the BJP wanted it to be closed to get these voices suppressed forever.

“Our country needs 1,500 more universities by 2020. If the BJP really wants to get universities named after their leaders, they can open 1,500 universities and get children enrolled,” the NSUI said.

Several students have also mocked Mr. Hans on the social media, saying he did not know what the full form of JNU was and wondered how he could suggest change to its name during his first visit to the university.
