Scores of students on Monday staged a protest outside the HRD Ministry here to vent their anger over the alleged suicide of a Dalit research scholar of Hyderabad Central University.

The protest that started with students sloganeering while marching towards the Ministry, seeking Minister Smriti Irani’s intervention in the matter, turned violent when 70 protesters were detained. According to police, the protesters tried to jump over barricades and attacked security personnel, causing injuries to them, prompting the police to use water cannons and detain them.
