Accusing the Centre of “hatching a conspiracy >to promulgate a new ordinance” on land acquisition by proroguing Rajya Sabha, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday said it would think of supporting the bill only if amendments proposed by the party are incorporated.
“We will not support the bill in its current format, but if all our concerns are taken care of only then we will think over it,” CPI(M) politburo member and Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury told reporters here.
“The government is hatching a conspiracy to first prorogue the Upper House where they are in minority and then get a new ordinance for land acquisition bill as the current ordinance will expire on April 6,” he said.
He said that the Opposition does not even know what changes the government has made in the new proposed Bill.
“What is modified let us know it first. Till now Modi sahib and his representatives have told us nothing, nothing about what changes they are proposing. Let them tell us first only then we can react on the changed bill,” he said.
He said that the Parliament session was on and the parliamentary standing committee that looks into the budget allocation of the entire department was meeting, so there was a break.
“When we meet again on April 20 and after that when the House is not in session, they will bring another ordinance which is undemocratic and wrong. They want to bring the law without even letting lawmakers have a discussion on it,” he said.
He said the CPI (M) would continue to oppose the bill and if the government remains “adamant” with its proposal to bring in the ordinance, all Opposition parties would unite.
“This is a dictatorial attitude. Ordinance comes into force in exceptional circumstances,” he said.
