The need for a booster or additional COVID-19 vaccine dose or reduction in time gap between two doses of the available vaccines are being examined, said Dr. Samiran Panda, Head, Epidemiology and Communicable Diseases, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), on Sunday adding that an alarmist intervention doesn’t help.
Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Chandigarh reported their first Omicron cases on Sunday , while Maharashtra and Karnataka each recorded one more case of the COVID-19 variant, taking the tally in the country to 38.

One-time financial of Rs 50,000 given to 21,235 families of Covid victims: Delhi minister
The Delhi government has provided a one-time financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to 21,235 families that lost their near ones to COVID-19, Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam said on Monday.
Separately, 9,484 of the 12,668 applications received have been approved for a monthly pension of Rs 2,500, he said at a press conference here.
Under the "Mukhyamantri COVID-19 Pariwar Aarthik Sahayata Yojana", the Delhi government has been providing a one-time financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to the families of all the coronavirus victims in the city and a monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 to households that have lost the sole breadwinner and for children orphaned due to the pandemic.
"A total of 25,100 applications have been received for a one-time financial aid of Rs 50,000. So far, 21,235 families have been given the assistance," Gautam said.
Around 2,500 families did not avail the scheme due to various reasons, while around 1,500 will receive the aid soon, he added. - PTI
Covid vaccines, previous infection offer ‘stronger than basic’ protection against Omicron: Study
People previously infected with COVID-19 and those vaccinated will have some "stronger than basic" protection against Omicron, according to one of the earliest peer-reviewed studies looking into the recently identified variant of coronavirus.
However, the study conducted in a lab suggests that Omicron "exceeds" all other variants in its potential capability to evade the protection gained from previous COVID-19 infection or vaccination.
The findings, published in the journal Emerging Microbes & Infection, also suggest that although a third-dose of vaccines can “significantly boost immunity", the protection from Omicron "may be compromised".
The researchers from the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control in China, however, noted that more research is needed to better understand the association. - PTI

India sees 7,350 new COVID-19 cases, 202 deaths
India's coronavirus tally rose to 3,46,97,860 with 7,350 people testing positive for the infection in a day, while the number of active cases declined to 91,456, the lowest in 561 days, the Union Health Ministry data showed on Monday.
The death toll from the pandemic has climbed to 4,75,636 with 202 new fatalities, according to the data updated at 8 am.
The daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been recorded below 15,000 for the last 46 days now.
The number of active cases has declined to 91,456, comprising 0.26% of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.37%, the highest since March 2020, the Health Ministry said. -PTI

U.K. raises coronavirus alert level over increased Omicron transmission
The U.K. government on Sunday raised the country’s coronavirus alert level from three to four due to the rapid increase of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, recording another 1,239 cases to take the total to 3,137.

Israel imposing travel ban for Britain, Denmark, Belgium over Omicron spread - official
Israel on Sunday announced it was adding Britain, Denmark and Belgium to its "red" list of countries that Israelis are forbidden to visit, citing concern over the spread of the Omicron variant.
The travel restrictions for the three countries will go into effect on Wednesday, a senior Israeli health official told a news conference.
Israel has already banned the entry of foreigners to try to stem COVID-19 infection rates and imposed 3-7 day self-isolation orders for Israelis returning from abroad. -Reuters
Thousands protest in Prague against COVID-19 vaccine mandate
Several thousand people marched through the Czech capital on Sunday, protesting a COVID-19 vaccination mandate for certain groups including people age 60 and over.
The participants didn’t wear face coverings or follow social distancing rules despite a request by police to do so. One person was detained.
The protesters, chanting “Freedom!” alleged their constitutional rights are being violated. They said they weren't against voluntary vaccination but opposed a vaccine mandate. -AP
