A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi called himself a Kaamdaar (worker) as opposed to a naamdaar (dynast), in a veiled reference to Congress president Rahul Gandhi during the Karnataka campaign, the Congress party on Wednesday hit back by terming Mr. Modi’s idea of economics as ‘all dialogue and no delivery’.

Congress’ communication head Randeep Surjewala in a series of tweets said both workers and agriculturists are worse off under Modi government than they were during UPA. “‘Modinomics’ of ‘ All Dialogue & No Delivery’. You carry a fake diatribe for ‘Kaamdar’s’ but your govt’s study exposes the truth- 1. Rural wages at a peak of 38% in 2014. Wage growth is down to 0% under ur watch. 2. NAREGA work down to 16.3 days in 2016,” tweeted Mr. Surjewala.”

The Congress also said the BJP had no “moral authority” to make corruption the main issue of its Karnataka campaign as their Chief Ministerial candidate B.S. Yeddyuruppa was “jailed on corruption charges” and the party has given tickets to the controversial Reddy brothers of Ballary.

“The BJP itself had sacked Mr. Yeddyruppa on charges of corruption and had thrown him out...said Congress leader Rajeev Shukla.

Mr. Surjewala referred to a research paper of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that claimed that from a peak of 38% in 2014, growth in wages for agricultural workers have almost become zero.

This, the RBI paper notes, is a result of the cut in work given to rural workers under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

Tweeting in Kannada with the hashtag #Answer from Modi, Mr. Surjewala said the Prime Minister Crop Insurance scheme that was meant to help farmers actually ended up earning huge profits for the insurance companies.

He claimed while premium deposited was to the tune of ₹20,478 crores, compensation paid to farmers was only ₹5,650. “Farmers duped by Modi! PM Fasal Bima Yojna is ‘Pvt Companies Kalyan Yojna’. Farmers suffer, Companies Profiteer. Insurance Co’s earn windfall profit of ₹14,828 Cr in 2016-17 as BJP gives ‘Jumla’ of #FarmersWithModi,” tweeted Mr. Surjewala while adding the that the Modi Government has not delivered on the promise of ferijf cost plus 50% as the formula for giving minimum support price.
