The Congress on Monday questioned the “sustained misinformation” campaign against Lok Sabha member Shashi Tharoor by “a certain section” of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Deprecating the campaign based on “innuendo and insinuation,” the Congress sought to underline the fact that Mr. Tharoor “neither was nor is an accused” in the murder case of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.
The detailed response to the controversy came after Mr. Tharoor met Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel on Sunday night soon after landing in the capital. This is his first visit to the city after a case of murder was registered last Tuesday.
Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala said the BJP leaders, who are carrying out the misinformation campaign, “appear to or at least claim to have access to documents which can be only with the investigating officer” of the case.
“The authenticity of such information is in serious doubt,” he said, adding that if such information was available to some sections of the BJP, it is for the investigating agency to clarify.
Further, Mr. Surjewala said: “Mr. Tharoor has steadfastly maintained that he is willing to participate and cooperate with the police. In the light, thereof, we deprecate any misinformation campaign based on innuendo and insinuation.”
