Congress chief to visit Bahrain

Congress president Rahul Gandhi will be visiting Bahrain on Monday to take part in ‘Global Organisation of People of India Origin’ organised by the Indian diaspora. He will meet Prime Minister Prince Salman bin Hamas Al-Khalifa.

According to a statement issued by the Congress party, Mr. Gandhi will be the chief guest at the valedictory session of ‘Global Organisation of People of India Origin’ (GOPIO) on Monday.

Gulf countries have the biggest Indian diaspora, an estimated 35 lakh. Delegates from more than 50 countries are expected to take part in the event.

The visit is part of an effort to interact with people of Indian Origin (PIO) and Mr. Gandhi will also be interacting with business leaders during his visit.

The Congress says apart from meeting the Crown Prince, efforts are being made to organise a meeting with the King of Bahrain, Hamas bin Isa Al Khalifa.

Ahead of 2019 elections, the Congress President’s visit is significant, as the party will seek to present the leader to an in international audience.

Mr. Gandhi had undertaken a similar trip to the United States last September, where he interacted with students at University of California in Berkeley about the state of politics back home, which included questions on the Congress party being run on dynastic principles.
